User Policy

Use it well, use it fairly.

The acceptable-use rules that govern how you can interact with Counsolero — what's encouraged, what's prohibited, what's expected of you as the account holder, and what happens if those expectations are broken.

Acceptable use

What Counsolero is built for.

Counsolero is a personal academic workspace for students. The following uses are exactly what the service is designed to support:

  • Reviewing your own Canvas grades, assignments, and course content
  • Asking the AI counselor questions about your own coursework and academic plan
  • Generating study materials (quizzes, flashcards, study guides) from your own course content
  • Planning your degree, tracking units, and exploring scheduling alternatives
  • Uploading your own course files for the AI to reference when answering your questions

If you're using Counsolero to learn, plan, study, or stay organized for classes you're actually enrolled in, you're on the right path.

2

Prohibited

What you may not do.

The following are violations of this policy and may result in account suspension or termination (see Section 6).

Zero-tolerance categories

The following are flatly prohibited regardless of context, account type, or intent. A single confirmed violation results in immediate account termination and, where required by law, a report to the appropriate authorities:

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Uploading, storing, generating, requesting, soliciting, or distributing any visual depiction of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct is prohibited. If we become aware of apparent CSAM on Counsolero, 18 U.S.C. § 2258A requires us to report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline, and we will do so. We do not run automated CSAM-detection or hash-matching tooling today, so our awareness depends on user reports and staff review.
  • Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) and deepfake intimate imagery. Uploading, generating, or distributing intimate images of real people without their consent — including AI-generated deepfakes — is prohibited and is reportable under the federal Take It Down Act and applicable state laws. For removal requests under the Take It Down Act, see Section 8 of the Contact page.
  • Content depicting or facilitating violence against real persons. Threats of violence, doxxing, swatting, or content soliciting harm to identifiable people are prohibited.
  • Weapons-of-mass-destruction uplift. Using the AI to obtain or refine instructions, designs, or operational guidance for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive (CBRN/E) weapons; for malware or cyber-weapons capable of significant harm; or for evading critical-infrastructure security controls.
  • Election manipulation. Generating disinformation about elections, voting procedures, candidates, or election officials; or generating deepfakes of political figures intended to deceive voters.

General prohibitions

  • Account sharing. One account per person. Do not share your credentials, your session, or your Canvas-connected workspace with anyone else. Counsolero holds you responsible for everything done through your account
  • Unauthorized access. Do not attempt to access another user's account, data, or Canvas connection. Do not attempt to bypass authentication, authorization, or rate-limiting controls
  • Automated access and scraping. Do not use bots, scrapers, headless browsers, or any automated tooling to interact with Counsolero or extract data from it. Programmatic access is reserved for documented API surfaces (none currently public)
  • AI-specific abuse. Do not attempt prompt-injection or jailbreaking attacks against Counsolero or other users' sessions. Do not attempt model extraction, training-data extraction, or reconstruction of provider system prompts. Do not use Counsolero outputs to train, fine-tune, evaluate, or benchmark competing AI models. Do not use the AI to generate harassing, defamatory, or sexually explicit content, or to target real third parties without consent
  • Using AI for coursework that prohibits AI assistance. Counsolero does not endorse — and this User Policy and our Terms of Service prohibit — using the AI features to draft, complete, or supply answers for any assignment, quiz, exam, or other coursework where your instructor, syllabus, honor code, or course-level policy expressly bars the use of AI. You are responsible for knowing your course's rules; see Section 3 for the full academic-integrity expectation. Violation of this policy may result in account action under Section 6 in addition to any consequence your school imposes
  • Reverse engineering. Do not attempt to decompile, disassemble, or otherwise derive source code, model weights, prompts, or system behavior beyond what is publicly documented
  • Service disruption. Do not deliberately flood, overload, probe for vulnerabilities, or otherwise degrade availability for other users. Responsible security disclosure is welcome — see Contact
  • Illegal activity. Do not use the service to plan, coordinate, or carry out activity that is illegal in your jurisdiction
  • Spam, fraud, and impersonation. Do not impersonate Counsolero, your school, an instructor, or another student. Do not use Counsolero to send unsolicited bulk messages
  • Uploading content you don't have rights to. Only upload files that you authored, that your instructor distributed for class use, or that you otherwise have permission to upload. Do not upload pirated textbooks, copyrighted material you don't own, or other students' work without consent. See the DMCA takedown procedure in Contact for copyright complaints
  • Misuse of synced Canvas data. Do not connect a Canvas account that you do not legitimately control. Do not use the Canvas integration to mirror data belonging to anyone but yourself

Academic integrity

Use AI responsibly.

Counsolero gives you a powerful AI study partner. That partner is a tool, not a substitute for your own work, and how you use it is your responsibility — not ours and not your school's.

Your school's rules come first

Many courses and institutions have specific rules about AI assistance — sometimes encouraged, sometimes restricted, sometimes prohibited outright. Check your syllabus, your honor code, and your instructor's policy before using AI features on a graded assignment. Counsolero cannot know what your course allows; you have to.

Don't pass AI work off as your own

Submitting AI-generated text, code, or analysis as if you wrote it yourself — when your course prohibits it — is academic dishonesty. The same logic applies to study-tool outputs (AI-generated quizzes, flashcards, study guides) if you reproduce them in a context where AI assistance is not allowed.

AI output is not authoritative

The AI can be wrong, can hallucinate citations, can misread your transcript, and can give confident-sounding advice that doesn't match your school's actual requirements. Treat its output as a draft to verify, not a verdict to act on. Verify grade calculations, degree-plan implications, and prerequisite chains against your school's official systems before making decisions.

4

Responsibility

Your account, your responsibility.

You are responsible for everything done through your account, including:

  • Keeping your Clerk authentication credentials private and secure
  • Signing out on shared or public devices
  • Reviewing the Canvas connection you authorize and disconnecting it if you no longer want syncs to happen
  • Notifying us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access to your account
  • Keeping the email on your account current — undo links and security notices go there

If you suspect your account has been compromised, change your Clerk credentials immediately and contact support. We can review the security audit log to investigate.

5

Reporting

Report a violation.

If you've noticed abuse, suspected unauthorized access, security issues, or anything else that looks like a violation of this policy, reach out via the Contact page. Helpful detail to include:

  • What you observed
  • When it happened (approximate timestamp is fine)
  • Any accounts, URLs, or specific features involved
  • Steps to reproduce, if applicable

Security researchers reporting vulnerabilities in good faith should also use the Contact page. We won't pursue legal action against researchers who follow responsible-disclosure norms (give us a reasonable window to fix before publishing, don't access data beyond what's needed to demonstrate the issue, don't degrade service for other users).

6

Consequences

If this policy is broken.

When we observe a violation of this policy, we may — proportionate to the severity and the pattern of behavior — take one or more of the following actions:

  • Warn you and ask for the behavior to stop
  • Temporarily rate-limit or restrict specific features (for example, AI chat)
  • Disconnect Canvas and prevent reconnection
  • Suspend the account pending review
  • Permanently terminate the account
  • Place a legal hold on the account, blocking deletion, if law-enforcement or institutional compliance requires it
  • Report unlawful activity to the appropriate authorities

When we terminate an account for policy violations, the standard 14-day deletion grace period described in the Privacy Policy still applies to the personal data we hold, unless a legal hold is in effect. The retained-but-nulled rows described in Section 4 of the Privacy Policy survive in both cases.

Appeal procedure

If we take an action against your account under this policy, we will notify you by email with a brief reasoned statement of what we did, why, and which provision was implicated (subject to legal-process restrictions where applicable).

You may appeal that action within 30 days of the notification by replying to that email or writing to [email protected] with "APPEAL" in the subject line. Helpful detail to include: the account email, the action being appealed, why you believe it was taken in error, and any context we may not have had when we made the decision. We aim to acknowledge appeals within two business days and reach a final decision within 14.

Where practical, appeals are reviewed by a different person than the one who made the original decision. Our final decision on the appeal is binding for purposes of this policy, but it does not waive any rights you have to seek relief from a court of competent jurisdiction, a privacy supervisory authority, or another applicable regulator (see Contact).

7

Changes

Changes to this policy.

Counsolero LLC reviews this User Policy at least annually and updates it when the prohibited-use list, the consequences framework, or the appeal procedure materially changes. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page is the date of the most recent revision. For material changes — including the addition of a new zero-tolerance category, a change to the appeal timeline, or a change to how violations are escalated — we will notify you by email and by an in-app banner at least 30 days before the change takes effect.
